i really want to go to spain but through previous experiences of trying to learn french i have realised it will be very hard for me to learn a different language… im not saying its impossible and i would proably learn over time just that it would take a lot of time. anyway do many people in spain speak english as a second langauge? like could i live in spain, say, for a year and get by speaking only english?

Yes many of us speak or try to speak English as a second language, but you must know, here English is not aprecciate… we learn coz we are obligated to do in school, some ppl like it and most dislike it and speak such and English… and if you dont talk Spanish maybe u have big big problems to do anything here.
Its better for learn the language of the country, at least the basics, if you wanna live one year the less u have to say is how to ask in Spanish for bread how to go to some places and something like these.
But as u want.
Yes many people here do speak basic english if needed.. ( In the major cities like Barcelona or Madrid).. In smaller cities it may be a bit harder to find people but you will. Either way the Spanairds in general are very friendly people and will try to help you in anyway..
Take care..

I have been to several places in Spain-Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Toledo and Granada–and I have found that many of the people are reticent to speak English with Americans. I had a bit of Mexican Spanish under my belt, but found that this form of Spanish is often frowned upon by Spaniards. Many of the Spanish speak several languages, and upon usage of some Spanish and very good manners, you can usually find someone who is willing to speak with you in English.
I have found most Europeans will speak English if you make an honest effort at speaking their language…and you must be gracious as well.
Try taking a class in Spanish. It is very similar in construction to English and some words are very similar. I found it much easier than French.
Good luck!

im sure they do,they so close to england, and also spain has a town in southern spain that is mainly english
I’m sure you could. Especially if you go to a tourist-y town. Lots of people learn English because it’s useful..especially in dealing with tourists.
