    Wow… that is difficult :S
I use the online LEO dictionary (www.dict.leo.org) whenever I encounter unfamiliar words in German, and though it doesn’t tell you the gender of the words (usually nouns) directly, you can infer it from the particle associated with it: das = neuter, die = feminine, der = masculine. If there is no particle associated it is not a noun, probably a verb, adjective, adverb etc instead. What I find particularly useful about this online dictionary is that it lists several contexts in which a particular word is used (especially if the word contains several meanings), and introduces some colloquial/commonly used phrases associated with it. If you have any burning problems about German-English translations or grammatical queries etc you can also discuss them with other German learners there :)
Hope it would be of useful help to you!
