   When people teach me spanish words they use a ‘la’ or something at the beggining, can someone explain this to me?

   ‘La’ is the feminine article The. ‘El’ is the masculine one. Spanish nouns were assigned a genre when created, so it is VERY hard to learn which is a masculine or femenine noun or adjective-noun. However, you can distinguish them by their last letter: ‘o’ is generally male, ‘a’ is generally female. Some examples: ‘El sol’ (the sun), ‘La luna’ (the moon), ‘el hombre’ (man), ‘el amor’ (love), ‘la luz’ (the light), ‘lo oscuro*’ (the daek), ‘el área’ (the area) and ‘las áreas*’ (the areas).
