Language Immersion And The Montessori Method?
Does anyone know of any research on language immersion programs and Montessori?
I ask because our daughter attends a new pre-school Montessori program that was originally planned to have a language immersion component.
There are three teachers in the school: one who speaks to the kids only in English, one just in Mandarin, one just in Spanish. And they had planned to have an after school (12:30-2:30 pm) immersion time, taught only by the relevant language teacher.
However, the folks running the school have decided that this approach goes against the Montessori method because children are not getting to choose which language to talk in during that immersion time.
However, we (and a number of other parents) feel that language is a very different animal from other subjects and that language immersion has such powerful benefits that it will be a real loss if the kids are able to opt out of it.
Anyone aware of research that would support either position?
Do Any Of You Think That The Language Immersion Method Of Learning Foreign Languages Is Overrated?
I have never come close to studying a language with this method but I have seen some colleagues get amazing results from just three months or so in a foreign land.
But are there any negative experiences out there?

How Effective Are Spanish Language Immersion Programs?
I will be staying in Spain with a host family and taking courses for 6-7 weeks during the summer. My Spanish is advanced, but I have an awful time communicating. Does anyone have any clue if immersion works if you are only there for 6 weeks? Thanks for sharing your ideas and experiences with me.

Do You Think Language Immersion Classes Are An Effective Teaching Method Or Not?
I am thinking of putting my daughter in a Hawaiian Immersion class next school year from kindergarten to 5th grade. The teacher will only speak in Hawaiian, the parents need to attend classes in the evening to learn Hawaiian so we can speak it at home. I just wonder how this will affect her other subjects.

I’d really like to go to a french-speaking country over the summer and take an immersion course. It would be great to be somewhere with small classes that has some social activities too. Has anyone done any french immersion programs? Which program, and what did you like about it/dislike about it? Any experiences would be so helpful!
